The main character Toubee, who lives in Edo, pretends to be a ronin, but has mastered ninja techniques and runs an illegal escape agency.
The title "Chikuden" means "to flee and disappear" in Japanese.
The story takes place in Japan in the early Edo period. Toubee, who is in the business of helping people suffering from oppressive government policies escape from Edo, is introduced to a job offer by Matsuo Basho, a ninja master.
The job is from the Mito domain and involved finding the daughter of a wealthy merchant who had gone missing and escorting her back to Mito.
However, while they are discussing the job, their house is blown up by an entity who seems to be the mastermind behind the incident.
With the loss of his work tools and no leads, Toubee begins his investigation with the support of the Mito domain.
