More than ever, playing a pure caster will be possible in Elden Ring , the presence of the Horse adds more mobility that was lacking for them to become living gods in PvE. There are already many spells on the beta , some were in the studio's previous games, others are new. They are also supplemented by weapon skills, which sometimes have nothing to envy to spells. New spells, as powerful as they are impressive, have also been introduced. Who doesn't want to have a giant dragon's breath at level 1?
Before going into details, remember that the information in this article is taken from the beta. They are incomplete and it has been confirmed that spell positions will be different in the full version of the game when it is released on February 25, 2022 . It is also to be expected that dozens of additional spells will be present. The position of the listed spells may also change, FromSoftware was probably generous in the network test. This article will therefore be updated in due course.
General
- Spells require an appropriate balanced catalyst, the nature of which depends on the type of spell. It's a Shard Staff for Shard sorceries ( Enchanted Knight class for example), and a Sacred Seal for Incantations , the equivalent of Miracles and Pyromancies (Prophet and Champion classes) which have been combined.
- Spells cost CP to cast, it's the equivalent of mana in Elden Ring. CP don't regenerate on their own, you have to rest or consume Vials of Blue Tears. The amount of CP available to you depends on the Spirit stat.
- New to Elden Ring is the ability to charge certain spells by holding down the R1 or L1 key . This will greatly boost the effect and damage, without costing additional CP.
- As mentioned above, you can cast your spells on horseback, it's absolutely devastating if you choose them well.
- You can increase the power of spells by improving the stat linked to them (Faith or Intelligence in general, Esotericism in some cases), by getting your hands on a better Spell Catalyst, and/or by improving it at the forge.
List of shardstone sorceries
These spells are based on Intelligence, they serve as a repertoire for the archetype of the Mage or Sorcerer in this universe.
Cost in CP: 7
Slots used: 1
Intelligence Required: 10
Effect : Fires magical shardstone projectiles.
This is the basic spell, its damage is low but adapted to small targets that it kills in one or two shots. The range is decent too, and there is a very slight guiding effect. You will, however, miss targets that move laterally. This spell has a low cost in CP and above all, it can be fired in a chain very quickly, which allows you to strafe a boss or a large enemy.
Source : Available from the start for the Enchanted Knight. Can also be purchased from Sellen the Witch in the Ruined Cave in Pumpkin Head .
Cost in CP: 23
Slots used: 1
Intelligence Required: 15
Effect : Summons a magic sword that impales the enemy.
The second base spell of the Enchanted Knight, it is formidable in melee. The great sword that shoots out of your staff pierces all enemies for several meters, even if they have a shield, making it a good choice on heavy targets. The damage is also very important. Its casting time is quite short, which makes it a good tool, but beware of the high CP cost.
Source : Available from the start for the Enchanted Knight.
Cost in CP: 14
Slots used: 1
Intelligence Required: 13
Effect : Fires magic stars that track their target.
The advanced version of Shardstone Arrow, the damage is greater, and above all, the projectiles track their target, even if it means turning around, so this makes it an excellent spell on moving and fast targets, such as riders. On the other hand, it is twice as expensive and its incantation is also longer. So it's better to keep it for important targets rather than basic enemies.
Source : Purchased from Sellen the Witch in the Ruined Cave in Pumpkin Head.
Cost in CP: 30
Slots used: 1
Smart Required: 16
Effect : Summons a shower of small meteorites.
Note : This spell can be charged to increase damage.
The 3 meteorites summoned by this spell are very far apart, so it is virtually impossible to hit the same target, unless it is very large, like a dragon. This makes it difficult to use, especially if you want to load it to the max, so not too much of an option in the middle of combat. It is fantastic for opening hostilities by shooting it at a group of enemies, while hiding in a bush.
Source : Purchased from Sellen the Witch in the Ruined Cave in Pumpkin Head.
Cost in CP: 9
Slots used: 1
Smart Required: 11
Effect : Draws from your blood to create thorns.
Note : This spell also consumes life. You can cast it 3 times in a row, each time increasing the area of effect, damage, and life consumed.
An unusual spell that can come in handy if you're surrounded. However, the successive casting times and the consumption of life make it a terribly risky, even suicidal choice.
Source : Purchased from Sellen the Witch in the Ruined Cave in Pumpkin Head.
Cost in CP: 12
Slots used: 1
Intelligence Required: 10
Effect : Projects several magic bubbles.
This spell will make you as fearsome as Magikarp. In the current state of the spell, it is difficult to find a use for it. The bubbles float a few meters, they explode if an enemy touches them, or after a few seconds. The damage is very low, the range too.
Source : Purchased from Sellen the Witch in the Ruined Cave in Pumpkin Head.
Cost in CP: 10
Slots used: 1
Intelligence Required: 13
Effect : Projects a wide horizontal magic arc.
This spell is formidable against large groups of enemies, since it is wide and has a long range. All targets on the trajectory will be affected. It also crosses some obstacles. The damage is however quite light. Fortunately, its cost is low.
Source : Found on a corpse in the middle of an ambush of giant crabs east of Lake Agheel the Dragon .
List of Incantations
At the moment, Miracles and Pyromancies are named Incantations in Elden Ring, and they use the same type of catalyst, named Holy Seal, so they have been grouped together. These spells are Faith-based, serving as repertoire for the Priest, Pyromancer, and even Draconic Champion archetype, which seems like a lot as it stands. This may be split into several separate categories in the full game, for example with different Catalysts, but that's just a guess. It's also possible that the studio just wants to give players more options and flexibility.
Cost in CP: 32
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 12
Effect : Heals yourself and nearby allies.
A big treatment, relatively long to launch, since it requires kneeling, and very expensive. It does, however, have the merit of healing a large amount of life to all allies, including spirit summons and other players. This makes it a fantastic choice in both single and multiplayer, especially if you rely on other people to tank for you.
Source : Available from the start for the Prophet. Also sold by the Gatekeeper of Voilorage Castle after completing the beta.
Cost in CP: 16
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 8
Effect : Heals a small amount of life.
A healing spell that is quick to cast, even while moving, and less expensive. However, it only heals you, and a lower amount of health than the Base Heal. In practice, it serves as a replacement for Vials of Crimson Tears in combat. The low Faith requirement also makes it a good secondary support spell option for classes that prefer to let guns do the talking.
Source : Found on a corpse in the Blackwater Catacombs , in Necrolimbo.
Cost in CP: 8
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 10
Effect : Splits the land with beast claws.
Note : Can be charged for more damage.
Probably the toughest spell in the beta. The range is average, the casting time too, but the CP cost is low and the damage is high. The 5 claws pass through a large cone-shaped area, and they pass through their targets. It allows you to demolish groups of enemies like bosses. Its flaws are that it does not work on flying targets, nor in shallow water, which makes it almost unusable on the dragon for example.
Source : Available from the start for the Prophet. Also sold by the Gatekeeper of Voilorage Castle after completing the beta.
Cost in CP: 16
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 12
Effect : Your eyes fire the Golden Exalted Flame.
Note : This spell can be charged to create more flames.
A slightly strange spell, a rain of golden fire will sweep the area in front of you in a somewhat random way, which makes it rather suitable for combat against a group of enemies. This spell will fill your own Madness gauge in return, and if the gauge is full, you suffer HP and CP damage, so don't use it too many times in a row. It also charges the Madness bar of targets hit.
Source : Sold by the wandering merchant on the beach west of the tutorial.
Cost in CP: 7
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 8
Effect : Cures poison. Reduces accumulated poisoning.
Another support spell for all, to save consumables in the future poisonous swamp that awaits you.
Source : Found on a corpse in front of a campfire on the beach west of the tutorial, not far from the white footprints . It can also be obtained from a beetle in the second beach further south, on the other side of the waterfall.
Cost in CP: 9
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 10
Effect : Produces a shockwave that knocks enemies back.
Note : Can be charged to increase the potency of the effect.
Similar to the spell present in Dark Souls, it can be cast very quickly, which will knock enemies back in all directions. It can also be chain thrown quickly. This makes it a good tool for getting clear when blocked by melee enemies.
Source : Found in Storming Catacombs in Necrolimbo.
Cost in CP: 17
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 15
Effect : Inflicts holy damage. Strong against the undead.
Quickly releases a large cone of golden light, damage is not impressive except on undead. The latter cannot come back to life if they are killed by this spell.
Source : Found on a corpse on a small high platform in the Scavenger's Shack, not far from Vanished Grace Point, on the way to Castle Veilrage.
Cost in CP: 10
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 8
Effect : Creates a living flame in your hands.
Allows you to release a very short range flame very quickly, especially after a roll or other. This makes it an interesting offensive spell in melee, when the attack window is reduced.
Source : Hidden behind the first flamethrower trap in the Storming Catacombs in Necrolimbo.
Cost in CP: 14
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 12
Effect : Projects fiery balls of fire.
Note : Can be charged to increase damage and area hit.
The proverbial fireball, it has a good range and a fairly fast cast speed if you don't charge it. If you aim well when throwing it, you can slaughter groups of enemies easily.
Source : Found on a beetle at the back and below the Church of Dragon Communion, on the island reached through the Cave of Demi-Human Leaders.
Cost in CP: 28
Slots used: 2
Faith Required: 12
Effect : Projects a fiery draconic breath.
A cone attack with surprising range and damage, but takes a bit of time to cast. By holding down the button, you will continue to breathe fire, which will engulf your enemies in flames, as well as your CP bar in two seconds. Blast direction can be altered during animation and channeling. This spell works miracles on horseback.
Source : Champion's base spell, can also be found on a corpse high up behind the ruins of the dragon statue on the island of the Church of Dragon Communion.
Cost in CP: 85
Slots used: 1
Faith Required: 15
Effect : Produces the cry of the Great Elder Dragon Greyoll.
Very slow to cast, this spell will produce a 360° draconic roar that will engulf your entire CP bar at once. In return, it inflicts very heavy damage to all enemies in a wide area around you. These are also weakened.
Source : Kill Agheel the Flying Dragon , then take his heart back to the Altar of the Church of Dragon Communion on the island.
Curses to come?
The spells interface clearly shows that some have a prerequisite in the Arcane statistic. It is to be expected that at least one additional type of magic, and one additional class that uses it, will be present in the full game. Based on Dark Souls 3 spells, it could be Dark Spells, aka Hexes. It could also be a whole new category of spells too, radically different from those in previous games.
