Players criticize the new League of Legends AFK detection, to which Riot dev responds.

Players' complaints that the new League of Legends AFK detection mechanism triggers too rapidly have been addressed by a Riot developer.

Nothing is more annoying than a colleague who is absentminded, and sadly, we've all definitely dealt with it at some point or another.

There is no perfect way to stop players from becoming AFK, but it happens in almost every game across the board.

With a punishment system and other features designed to penalize disruptive conduct, Riot is attempting to change that and address the problem head-on in League of Legends.

Riot developer addresses concerns about AFK detection

A League of Legends player started a conversation about the new AFK detection system, which alerts players after one minute of inactivity, in a Reddit thread on November 20, and the developers responded.

I'll take on Teemo. I'll go hide in a dot bush or whatever at the beginning of the game and remain invisble until the minions are approaching the lane. I receive the popup for the afk warning within that minute," the player wrote.

They said, "It's going off a little too quickly." "Try it out in a game; it's simple to duplicate. I don't stream, and the replay feature won't display this; else, I'd be able to show video proof.

Other gamers offered their opinions, and one fan proposed that the warning should only activate after a short period of time. Should be at least 30 seconds, they said. "Some individuals go get food or water before the game starts, and starting the game at the 30 second mark won't make much of a difference unless your team really wants to invade."

The devs responded, saying it's acceptable to expect players to do something to keep active and that the new AFK notice only activates after 60 seconds since your last input.

According to LoL producer Chris 'Auberaun' Roberts, "the pop-up is at about 60 seconds since your last input and it takes 90 seconds of no interaction to trigger a remake option, and we think it's a reasonable ask for people to do something in a 60/90 second window." "May be able to shift the popup back. It should be fine to give the water 30 seconds (albeit the game does not begin until 0:00!)

It makes sense that the developers are so focused on preventing players from going AFK since they want to create a game that is both healthier and more pleasant for users. But it's evident that the neighborhood thinks the new warning is a little over the top.
