È stato il primo della lunga serie di giochi Wonder Boy ed è stato seguito da cinque sequel, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Wonder Boy in Monster World e Monster World IV. È stato anche la base per la serie Adventure Island.
